Every October our emergency line lights up with failures a September tune-up would have prevented. Spend one weekend on this checklist and your furnace starts winter the way athletes start a season: warmed up, checked over, and ready.

Saturday morning: the homeowner jobs

  • Replace the filter — start the season with a clean one, and buy two spares while you're thinking about it.
  • Clear every vent and return — move furniture, rugs, and drapes off registers; vacuum dust off return grilles.
  • Clear the outdoor unit — two feet of space around condensers and heat pumps, leaves and mulch pulled back.
  • Test thermostat and run heat early — switch to heat for 15 minutes on a mild day. Burning-dust smell for a few minutes is normal; persistent odors or no heat are not.
  • Test smoke and CO detectors — fresh batteries, test buttons pressed, and check the manufacture date (replace CO alarms over 7 years old).

Saturday afternoon: the walkthrough

Walk the house while the heat runs. Note cold rooms, rattling vents, and any vent blowing weak — that list is gold for your technician. Check the furnace area itself: no stored paint, boxes, or laundry crowding the unit, and no water stains on or under it.

Leave these three to a pro

  • Burner and heat-exchanger service — cleaning, adjustment, and crack inspection require training (and the stakes are carbon monoxide).
  • Gas pressure and combustion testing — five minutes with a manometer tells us your furnace is burning safely and efficiently.
  • Electrical and safety-control testing — capacitors, ignition, flame sensing, and limit switches all get verified under load.

Book the fall tune-up before the rush

September slots are plentiful and cheap; late-November emergency slots are neither. Our fall heating service covers all three pro jobs plus a full safety inspection — and ComfortCare members get it automatically, scheduled around their lives.
